Function
The starter motor is a key part of the ignition system, and is responsible for turning the engine over so that it can start running on its own power.
-
Location
The starter motor is usually found at the back or in the front of the engine, towards the bottom of the housing.
-
How it works
When the ignition is turned on, the starter motor engages and turns the engine over, allowing it to suck in air. The starter motor needs a lot of current to do this, which can temporarily lower the battery voltage.
-
SoundsA clicking or chirping sound indicates that the starter is cranking, but the engine may not be getting enough fuel or air to start. A quiet whirring or buzzing noise could mean that the starter is freewheeling, which means it’s not catching properly on the flywheel.
