The steering rack’s main function is to convert the rotational motion of the steering wheel into the linear motion needed to turn the wheels. The rack and pinion gear set also reduces gears, making it easier to turn the wheels.
Manual steering racks are still used today, especially for low weight vehicles and race cars. They’re slower than power steering because the driver has to provide all the force for steering.
